In the extract mis-en-sen is constantly used for the setting of each scene. During the arrest of Kiegan Benson the setting is a lower class neighbour hood, possibly council estate with a large amount of people crammed into a small house. There are bottles and cigarettes everywhere and the room is cluttered and covered in rubbish. This is to portray a steriotypical living space of a criminal in a rough area in Brighton. The look of the set tells us these people are lower class citizens and not very hard working.


Another use of mise-en-scene within the extract is lighting. Before the police enter the house it is a bright sunny day, but, this contrasts with the inside of the house which is a dark, dingy scene with a lack of any natural or artificial light. The sudden loss of light within the house tells the audience that the police are now in danger, because darkness is supposed to connote danger. This means the audience understands that the situation has become serious and dangerous.

CLASH MEDIA LANGUAGE

Clash uses various forms of media language. In most of the clash magazines the colours are very plain, or foten a blurred background to put emphisis on the main splash. This also helps to show the musicians are serious and dark. The use of the plain backgrounds shows sophistication towards the artists.

The main image is often looking off in into the distance. This shows that the artists are above everyone else and connotes the seriousness of their career and background. Unlike other magazines, clash, has only 1 image on the cover of their magazines to further emphasise the importance of the main splash.

The clash cover is very plain consisting of the main splash and the masthead, there are no cover lines or excess things to it. Having one picture on the front focus' everyones attention on that oine thing rather than being distracted by clutter. The plain cover also connotes the sense of seriousness for the magazine.

Analyse the representations found in the UK television ad break for The Lego Movie. (10)

Theses original adverts were not made in the lego movie style however Warner Bros decided to make versions of them in order to promote the lego movie.

All of the adverts shown are aimed at adult/older audiences however recreating them in a lego style and using bright colours helps the adverts to connect with all audiences, whether you are middle aged and reckognise them from the originals or a child who can reckognise the lego versions.

The lego movie advert break shows that it is humorous but also serious. The british heart foundation advert is a serious topic which shows to the audience that the lego movie can provide a variety of scenes wether it being humorous and fun like what we assume it to be, and also serious.

In the lego movie Emmet is shown to be a regular person with no special powers or master builder abilities, he is just like me or you. Despite this he is the hero of the movie and a role model to many kids as it shows to them no matter who you are or where you come from you can be or do whatever you want. This might encourage parents to let there kids watch the lego movie as it is a valuable message many kids should hear.

On the other hand wild style, the main female lead of the movie, is a strong master builder who competes on par with her male counterparts throughout the movie. Wild style is liked by women as she challenges main characters in action based movies who are usually male.

HOW DOES THE AVENGERS CHALLENGE TRADITIONAL REPRESENTATIONS OF GENDER TO REACH A 1960's AUDIENCE?

In the Avengers, views on gender were different to that of the time and gave off a message that women are as capable as men. Emma Peel was a strong female lead which was very unusual for the time, especially one where a man acted by her side on the same level. Women back then if they acted it was usually as a lady who needed to be saved by the male character. However, in the Avengers Emma Peel shows she is capable of holding her own without the help of her male counterpart. When Steed goes to Emma Peel's house she is practising fencing which is seen as a masculine sport but she challenges Steed to a fight and holds her own against him. This shows she is not afraid of standing up to him. This was very unusual for a TV programme/film in the 1960's because women were never seen on a par to men and acting as their equals. Despite Emma Peel challenging Steed to a fight, Steed still wins because he is the male character and although Peel is shown to be able to hold her own, ultimately, he is still better than her.

Following the stereotypes of the 1960's, Emma Peel is often dressed in very tight costumes which tend to sexualise her. Also, whilst Steed and Peel were fencing at the beginning, Steed slaps Emma Peel's bum, which nowadays may be seen as mild sexual harassment. This along with her outfits, sexualises Emma Peel. This shows that, despite the Avengers challenging traditional views of gender roles in the 1960's, it still follows many stereotypes of women.

Analyse the representation of Jamaican Reggae music and musicians such as Bob Marley in this MOJO front cover

In this magazine extract, MOJO uses a plain background with bright red, yellow and green accent colours which are very eye catching and are associated with the reggae style of music. The main image is of Bob Marley who is representing the music genre. He is smiling and in a colourful shirt to match the reggae vibe. He also covers a considerable portion of the MOJO text which shows he is the most important thing on the page. This is different from the musicians and music styles MOJO use on their covers. Stereotypically, the artists are heavy metal/rock musicians and are older, white men, dressed in bleak colours. This shows that Jamaican Reggae is seen as colourful and fun whereas MOJO's usual genres are serious and dark.

The text on the front cover further expresses the colourful fun vibe that MOJO is trying to put forward (the word Marley which has a gradient like effect of red, yellow and green). Furthermore, Bob Marley may be staring into the audience rather than of into the distance because MOJO is trying to differentiate it from their typical magazine covers and they want the reader to connect with Marley and the positive vibe they are trying to convey.

Q5: How is media language used to reflect the genre conventions of a music magazine?

• • The stars take up the majority of the page showing their importance on the front cover.
  • The large text "ALL SAINTS" stands out from all the other dialogue on the cover and highlights the stars showing that they are the main focus.
  • The magazine uses sans-serif which portrays it as very modern and sophisticated.

The magazine colours are very muted which gives us the impression it is a very mature magazine aimed at older people. The main splash also helps to show this is a more mature magazine by not staring directly at the reader instead staring into the distance which creates an increased effect of sophistication whilst still giving an iconic aura to such an influential musician. The hint of yellow helps a lot to give a sense of fun for the more exciting parts that are included in the magazine.

It is clear from the front page that MOJO is looking for a striking and sensationalist cover so as to sell as many copies of MOJO as possible. By showing a young image of Ray Davies and using the word “surviving” they reinforce the iconic side of the Kinks and acknowledge their massive influence on musical culture. This image will be recognised by the older more mature audiences targeted by MOJO (such as 30-50 year olds). This type of audience like to be reminded of their youth as it is such an influential time.

On the cover the main splash is the picture of the musician and it is also the most eye catching bold part of the front page. His head covers the MOJO name on the cover which shows us that he is the most important part. Also his name is the largest text on the page which shows us he is the focus of this issue of the magazine. All of these aspects are here to reinforce the fact that he is the main splash. The rest of the cover and words are all similar in style and appeal.

This week I took some photos where I experimented with a light and used a lamp and pointed it at different parts of Mac's face (person in photo) to see the effects it creates, for example a dark more scary look.

These are my examples of still life photos. Still life photography is a genre of photography used for the depiction of inanimate subject matter, typically a small group of objects. It is the application of photography to the still life artistic style.

As an extra I took an abstract picture of an iris flower in a vase. The photo taken from above makes you wonder what you are looking at as you are viewing something from an unusual angle.

SOAP OPERA

In this scene the guys facial expression shows he is nervous because he is about to transport a bag of stolen money on a boat to another country.

In this scene these people are shown to be happy by the grins on their faces and the fact that they are dancing.

In this shot these two characters are shocked and scared as they are fearing for someones life.

In this screen grab these people are sad and mourning the death of someone as they are at a funeral.

Today I went out with a camera and took some experimental shots. These are a few of my favourites. In these shots I experimented a lot with focusing to see all the effects I could create. The second picture is a great example of this as the photo is focused on the person and not on the back drop, which is blurred. All my 3 photos are focused differently. The first is completely blurred (unfocused). The second is focused on the person and the background is blurred (unfocused). The last is completely in focus like an ordinary picture. Focus helps the person looking at the picture to see what the main thing or item is in the photo.

How far does the extract try to create a sense that it is portraying 'real life'?

The entire extract is here to create a sense of realism for what the viewers are watching. First of where the scene is set it is full of people and there are many things you would expect to see in real life. In the scene they are shooting in a shopping center which is a very normal place that lots of people would go to, so they can relate with it. The people at the shopping ceneter are very average aswell so it helps to make the scene more relatable and realistic. If the people weren’t acting normal and it was not a location people are familiar with they could get bored or lack the attention span to carry on watching because it is less intriguing. Also, there is a big use of codes and conventions throughout the extract.

There is a lot of varied stereotypes in the extract which is good because it shows that anyone of any colour or sexual orientation etc can still be a, for example, a police officer. When the ATM is being robbed people stereotype it to be men because they are generally related to more violent situations, but this is contradicted when the 2 officers on the scene for this part are both female. Also one of the officers was wearing a head scarf which shows anyone can be a police officer. This also shows racial diversity in the extract. In the scenes the actors also play their scenes very realistically. The acting in the scenes display the emotions very convincingly. All of these factors increase the realism of the episode making it much more gripping and enjoyable.

In photography, composition is the placement or arrangement of visual elements (or ingredients) in a work of art, as distinct from the subject. The term composition means placing together and can apply to any work of art from music to writing to photography.

Imagine that your image is divided into 9 equal segments by 2 vertical and 2 horizontal lines. The rule of thirds says that you should position the most important elements in your scene along these lines, or at the points where they intersect. Doing so will add balance and interest to your photo. Some cameras even offer an option to superimpose a rule of thirds grid over the LCD screen, making it even easier to use. Here are some of the photos I have taken:

Recently and I have been working on a cinematic co-curricular activities video. We had been filming clips from many different clubs around the school for the last week or so and have finally put them onto the Mac and began editing. We have taken many different shots such as focus pulls, over the shoulder and landscape shots. We edited text over the different clips to annotate what they are and added music into the background of the whole video.

The extract depicts the polices view a lot because it is trying to take the polices view and show us what they are dealing with. This is very noticeable in the police chase scene. The people watching the show do not see the pickup truck in the chase much but there are many shots of the policemen in the car chasing them looking onto the truck in front. This is a good example because it shows the officers point of view which is what the producers are aiming to show you. The police take up 90% of screen time because the show is based on the polices point of view and there experience with the crimes. This usually makes the viewers take side of the officers as they are the main focus of the show.

There are many shots in the extract that make the watcher feel as if they are in the show such as over the shoulder shots and close ups. This is because when there is an over the shoulder shot it lets the watcher see what the character is seeing. Also close up shots show the emotions of the characters such as if they are panting because they have been running or wide eyed because they are shocked. This can make the watcher feel the emotions of the characters.

Overall these aspects are the main ones that depict the polices point of view. These aspects I have analysed make the watcher feel the emotions of the officers or even as if they were in their position. This really draws the audience’s attention as these things immerse them into the show.

The sound in the extract is very intense. The music is very rythmic as it repeats the same intense beats over and over again. There is a contrast of sounds as there is intense music in the part of the forklift stealing the ATM but then it cuts to the other officers in the cafe with no music, but with the sounds of cutlery clinking with plates and people having conversations. At the end of the extract Jake and Ryan are speeding after the criminals and there are loud sirens coming from the Police car. The sirens make the listener feel slightly worried as sirens are usually related to bad events.

DOE 3

In class today we got into groups of 4 (Nathan, Mac, Seb and I) and we started filming for our pg horror movie trailers. We got some clips in class but at lunch we got back into our group and finished the filming and editing for our trailer. Our movie is called the circle game after this thing played at school called 'the circle game'. It is where if someone makes the shape with their fingers below their waist and someone looks at it, then they get to punch them. It is basically a horror itteration of a school game.
